Looking back

Dec 18 2018

I am honored to serve as the Congressman for the Fourth District of Michigan. I take very seriously the trust you have placed in me to represent your voice in Washington. As we end 2018 and prepare to head into a new year, I thought it would be worthwhile to review all that has happened in these past 12 months.

Tax reform: Wages are up, unemployment is low, more jobs.

I have seen firsthand as local businesses are building new facilities and putting out 'Help Wanted' signs to hire more workers for good-paying jobs. I voted for tax reform to let Michigan families and small businesses keep more of their own money and we are seeing good economic signs in mid and northern Michigan.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) passes.

I supported and got signed into law funding for the Great Lakes. The GLRI benefits our state and does vital work to help ensure Michigan families will be able to enjoy the Great Lakes this summer and for years to come.

Building A New Lock at the Soo Locks

I personally met with President Trump about the Soo Locks and got him to support the building of a new lock, next to the one that is 50 years old. In October, the president signed a new law authorizing construction, and then in November the Army Corps made the project a priority in its work plan for 2019. All of this happened in seven months, making more progress than had occurred in decades. I will continue to fight for this vital project as it moves forward in the years ahead.

Record VA funding with greater accountability for those who fail our veterans.

Finally, I supported legislation to protect veterans from people who would target veterans and steal their VA benefits. I supported the Veterans Opioid Abuse Prevention Act, which requires the VA to enter into an agreement with the national network of state-based monitoring programs to support the safe and effective prescription of controlled drugs to patients. I supported a COLA increase for veterans that President Trump signed into law. This increase will help Michigan veterans who are disabled from a wartime injury and it’s just a small part of how we can thank them for their selfless service to our nation.

As I continue to meet with constituents across the Fourth District, I look forward to working with you to advance our agenda in the coming year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
